ICEX GROUP stats in 2023 - looking towards 2024.
Here are our stats for 2023 (across all technology types):
✅ 60,069 IT assets processed by ICEX GROUP in the 2023 calendar year
✅ 52.6% revived for reuse by people again
✅ 47.4% recycled
✅ 0% to landfill
We are always pleased that we avoid sending any of the technology that goes through us to landfill - 0% to landfill is great but we are looking to improve beyond this as we aim to also reduce the amount we have to recycle.
Why is it “have” to recycle? - isn’t recycling a good thing? - well, yes and no.
To recycle is, of course, far better than dumping to landfill and helps to save many resources - but is it the ideal situation for a technology? No, it isn’t; it’s far better if we can revive the technology for reuse.
Unfortunately due to certain data protections and the designs of many technologies, we are forced to recycle where we would otherwise prefer to ‘revive’ the technology and get it back into the market for reuse whilst keeping to the highest data erasure standards.
In general, the thing that will make the biggest difference is manufacturers designing technology with the circular economy in mind - for example making parts easy to replace, or upgrade.
Another barrier we should aim to overcome is making sure that a machine can be wiped by data wiping software (we use Blancco which wipes data to the highest standards). This is done by making sure any Management Enrolment Programmes or BIOS locks etc are unlocked when devices are handed over to us. Otherwise, this forces companies like us to shred and then recycle hard drives. In this situation, our hands are tied by the data standards.
Some technologies are inherently easier to get back into the market such as PCs and laptops which often have a higher reuse percentage.
We want to keep on improving - so not just increasing the amount of technology that goes through us - but also increasing the relative amount we can revive for reuse whilst reducing the amount recycled and continuing to avoid landfill entirely.
