Workplace Recycling Updates From 31st March 2025

As you most likely will know, ICEX GROUP’s passion is sustainability with our focus being on reducing e-waste. So, this is a little different but we thought it was appropriate to highlight this as it impacts all workplaces - the UK Government has updated guidelines for recycling in line with their attempts to simplify recycling.

From the UK Government:

“From 31 March 2025 (or 31 March 2027 for micro-firms), all workplaces (businesses and non-domestic premises) in England have a legal duty to present the following wastes separated in accordance with the arrangements with their waste collector:

  • dry recyclable materials - plastic, metal, glass, paper and card (more information on separating recyclable material is in the ‘Separating recyclable waste’ section)

  • food waste

  • black bin waste (residual waste)”

We talk a lot about the circular economy at ICEX - we believe its principles to reduce waste will be the key to humanity not just surviving but also thriving as our populations increase.

It is good to see the Government mention their ‘circular economy strategy’ in their Simpler Recycling in England: policy update (link in comments). We must keep on calling for improvement and audit our governments to make sure our people are being represented in a way that looks to the future and reduces, eventually negating, the harm we as a species have done to the planet.

As with anything in politics, it remains to be seen, but it is good to see the circular economy being discussed - and at least once stated it can be called out if not honoured:

“The government is committed to moving towards a zero waste, circular economy. This will create a future where:

  • we keep our resources in use for longer and reduce waste

  • we accelerate the path to net zero

  • we see investment in critical infrastructure and green jobs

  • our economy prospers

  • nature thrives”
