Calling all IT Leaders: The importance of providing unlock keys for redundant IT equipment
ICEX GROUP is here to make the handling of your IT Assets more sustainable.
The focus of this post is on hard drives and data. Long story short, to be able to handle devices in the most sustainable and secure way, they need to be unlocked. That means we need Company Managed Enrolment Programs, Cloud and BIOS locks to be UNLOCKED so we can avoid shredding. With the unlock keys, we can reset to factory settings and do a proper data cleanse.
Have you heard of the Waste Hierarchy?
(If it interests you, check out our white papers on the Waste Hierarchy and the Circular Economy that we put on LinkedIn. Both links in comments below.)
The Waste Hierarchy makes it clear that Recycling something is worse for the planet than Reusing something.
This is why it is so important to be able to securely Data Cleanse hard drives to high Government standards. These standards offer the same level of data security as shredding. But without the shredding. At best, shredding means recycling (which is our last resort). And, at worst, when some companies shred hard drives (not us), it might lead to increased landfill.
ITAD/STARR service providers can only carry out a proper data wipe if the device is unlocked. If Company Managed Enrolment Programs, Cloud and BIOS locks are left locked, it forces us to recycle. Only if devices are unlocked can we securely data clean and reset the device to factory settings. This allows the device to be reused. This avoids landfill entirely , allowing a new user to make use of it. Good for the planet, good for people.
